Artist: K’naan
Song: ABCs
Album: Troubadour
K’naan is a Somali-Canadian Rapper. Born in Mogadishu, he lived through the Somali Civil war and that experience plays a pivotal role in a lot of his music. He has also done a lot of work with the UN to promote awareness of the plight of refugees. He is probably best known for his anthem ‘Waving Flag’ which was used as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He’s won numerous Juno awards (not that those are that difficult to get, or that valuable) and his music has been featured in a lot of video games, commercials and TV shows.
His style is reminiscent of more old-school hip-hop and takes the genre back to its poetic roots. Over time, his style has changed and his songs now include such artists as Adam Levine and Mos Def, bringing him greater commercial success as seen in his recent song ‘Bang Bang.’ A friend of mine introduced me to him 3 years ago and the first song I listened to was ABCs. The fast paced beat and the sick flow coupled with the lyrical poetry were an immediate attention-grabber. I’ve been listening to his music ever since, especially as a nice counterpoint to all the rock and indie music that was starting to dominate my playlist.

Superman is known by the locals
As this dude who's so fly it's global
Attitude that came outta struggle
Destitute but I make it hopeful
As this dude who's so fly it's global
Attitude that came outta struggle
Destitute but I make it hopeful
