After his retirement, he contracted HIV from a blood transfusion, and subsequently became an activist in the educating others about the effects of the disease. He fought it as hard as he fought any of his opponents on the tennis court, but this was the one opponent he couldn’t beat.

For his athletic achievements and public education efforts, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to add to the multitudes.
